The D-League in Portland!!

When will it happen - D-League team playing in Portland!

Some months ago, the Press Herald ran stories announcing a NBA D-League team coming to Portland soon. So what is happening now?? Well, if you check out this article in the Boston Globe, we should be hearing something soon. http://www.boston.com/sports/other_sports/articles/2008/12/26/maine_awaiting_word_on_d_league_team/

It seems that the official announcement of our Portland team must come anyday especially if they are going to play next season.

This team needs will also need name. What do you think? The name should be tied to Maine in some way but what/how!

So, come on help Name the Team!!!

A Celtics blogger came up with these ideas last year!!

Portland Shamrocks
Portland Leprechauns
Portland Schooners
Maine Attraction
Portland Lobstermen
Portland Green Pride
Portland Maniacs
Portland Evergreens
Portland Moose

Exciting, original!!! Not sure!! Come on - add your ideas!

  1. Southern Maine Quartz Miners

Quartz is a very common rock to be found in maine used for a lot of different things. Dual Meaning because Quartz and Courts and seeing the D League being a minor to the NBA.

Portland is Geographically located in the southern part of Maine. I know that us as Mainers would love to have a pro sporting team with not just a city name but even better the states name in it.

  2. I like the Portland Perth or Portland Pert.

Pert is a common Celtic name and it sounds good. It is often a baby Celtic name (which the D League team is).

    Other names....

    Portland Prohibition
    Portland Pound
    Portland Pursuit
    Portland Ports

  4. Off the top of my head

Use Portland or Maine in front if any of these unless otherwise noted

Stripers - striped bass for a mascot

Wicked Sharps - because they're style of play and uniforms are wicked sharp

Lumberjacks - they're tall AND strong

Maine Woodsmen - Similar to a lumberjack but with a broader spectrum of abilities

Tide - Maine has the most coast line of any state

    Undertow -

    Riptide -

Rapids - There is a lot of great white water in Maine

Osprey - a hawk commonly found in Maine

Harriers - as in the northern harrier, another hawk like bird found in Maine. Sounds like a particularly tenacious style of defense as well.

Keelhaulers - a severe form of corporal punishment meted out to sailors at sea
    definition from wiki)

Shipbuilders-already in use by Morse High, but a good Maine name all the same.

That's all for now, I'll keep working on it.

  5. The Portland bagpipes or bagpipers. You could have some crazy man running around with bagpipes during the games for a mascot and use the a symbol like the fighting Irish on the jerseys. This would also fall in line with the green and white colors

  6. Thought of a few more -

Yeti or Yetis - again, tall AND strong. I can just imagine the crowds reaction to the Yeti mascot dunking Dee Brown no look style off a trampoline at halftime...awesome.

Ice Devils or Snow Devils - Since we are in Maine not Arizona, Sun Devils won't work...but you get the idea.

Huskies - already the mascot of my two favorite colleges, USM and Uconn. Not to mention the tie in to Maine.

Come on people! Help me out. If you're reading this you are duty bound to contribute at least one suggestion...

  7. Portland Pioneers
    Portland Pride
    Portland Storm

    ...just some thought.

  8. BEST CHOICE FOR PORTLAND D-LEAGUE TEAM NAME-
Portland Anglers- defined as 1. "one who fishes with a hook" 2. a "scheming person".
This represents the local fishing industry and would make for a great mascot/imagery/logos for the team. This term can also be ambiguous in the definition with regards to basketball, as angles are key when making shots.

Portland Mudbugs- local vernacular for lobster, Maine's most well known attraction and export... that would be a pretty funky and entertaining mascot.

Portland Steel Toes-gritty name that well represents the hard working locals of the Northeast. You might think this sounds odd for a name, but refer to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and their marketing success.

  9. There is also a fish that lives in the bottom of the sea called an Angler Fish. This fish is very intimidating in appearance and would make for a great secondary logo.

  10. Not sure what kind of copyright issues there might be with this but why not honor the player that has been a true Celtic his whole career: Paul Pierce.
    The Portland Truth
    or
    The Truth of Portland
Obviously Paul Pierce couldn't be the mascot but really anything would work with that name, including Maine-related creatures.
